Borbon, Cebu
I found your feature on Borbon, Cebu intriguing mainly because of what the author left out. For instance, is it a good place for the kind of solace when one is contemplating divorce, or worse, marriage, or just to write? The author didn’t mention what she was writing about. Imagine a feature on a coastal town without mentioning what the fishermen still manage to catch or the quality of the water and the beach.
On the other hand, Ms. Yabes’s style still managed to captivate the imagination. (How does an okra sandwich taste?) That aside, why does one crave for solace and internet access at the same time? Aha, maybe I have the answer to that after all. And what is ‘a wall of ficus?’
Ms. Yabes’s account reminds me of a trip to Bantayan island not so long ago. When my companion returned after a dip, she couldn’t understand my uncontrollable laughter. There was this sign on a coconut tree which was legible only once you were directly under it. It read: ‘Watch out for falling coconuts!’ Tough luck, Or be careful what you wish for. When you get it, it might be a bit late.
